Definitions

Here is some of the most important chiropractic terminology to help you understand what chiropractic is, and how it can help you.

Chiropractic

Chiropractic is the science and art of detecting and correcting joint subluxations, using very specific adjustments. With the goal of restoring the proper position of the joints. Thereby allowing the joints to function properly. In addition to improving joint function, chiropractic also helps to eliminate the nervous system interference that the subluxation may have been causing. Chiropractic focus mainly on correcting the joint positions of the spine, but adjustments for the other joints of the body can also be performed. The joints away from the spine are referred to as extremities. Extremity subluxations typically result in pain and inflammation within the joint. Extremity adjustments performed by a chiropractor have the same goal as the spinal adjustments. To restore the proper joint position, restore joint function and eliminate any nervous system interference.

Subluxation

A subluxation is a misalignment of a joint that interferes with the normal function of the joint. Subluxations can cause pain and inflammation within the joint. Subluxations frequently interfere with the nerve or nerves that pass by, or in between the bones of the joint. The disruption of normal nervous system function may result in radiating pain, aching pain, numbness, or tingling in remote areas that the nerve supplies. The nervous system interference can even interfere with normal organ function, resulting in related symptoms or disease. Left uncorrected, the joint may become damaged over time, due to the deterioration being caused by the inflammation that results from joint's dysfunction.

Adjustment

Adjustments are the corrective process that a chiropractor uses to reposition subluxations. With the intention of restoring proper joint and nervous system function. Adjustments are done by hand or with instruments and other chiropractic tools. They can be performed on a patient of any age. After determining what subluxations are giving you trouble your chiropractor will determine the best way to adjust the joints back to their proper positions. Most patients like how the adjustment feels. The type of adjustment can always be modified by your chiropractor if necessary. If you are concerned, then just let the doctor know that you prefer them to use the most gentle adjustment techniques.

Spinal Adjustments

As chiropractors we will check and correct the joint positions of your spine. We will evaluate your spine for subluxations that may be resulting in joint pain, inflammation, and deterioration. In addition to maybe causing nervous system dysfunction. Which can cause, aching, pain, numbness, and tingling. As well as other symptoms, and diseases in any of the tissues or organs being effected by the nerve being disrupted.

Pediatric Adjustments

We check and insure the proper joint alignment in children, including newborns. By correcting any subluxated joints, especially joints of the spine, children are better able to reach their full health potential.

Extremity Adjustments

Sometime our patients have problems with other joints. Including, but not limited to the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles. The re-alignment of these joints is know as extremity adjusting. We are often able to help patients with extremity problems by returning a subluxated joint to its proper position, and therby restoring the joint's proper function.

Acute Care

Acute pain or problems usually appear suddenly. Often because of an accident or injury. Auto accidents, work injuries, and sports injuries are common causes of acute problems. Although sometimes the cause is less dramatic. Either way, chiropractic care can help relieve many acute conditions faster, and usually prevent the problem from becoming worse. The chiropractic adjustments may provide extemely quick relief in some cases. Even if the symptoms go away rapidly, it is still important to continue your care plan. Otherwise the symptoms may return or the underlying problem may worsen.

Chronic Care

Chronic problems, often develop gradually and continue for long periods of time. Sometimes chronic problems originate from an acute issue that doesn't resolve. Regardless of what the original cause of the your problems are, they will be will fully be evaluated. Then an appropriate care plan will be tailored to best address the underlying cause or causes of your chronic problems. Preventive Care

After we have helped our patients with an acute or chronic problem we advise preventative care. By continuing to be checked and having any subluxations corrected this will help prevent a relapse and reoccurrence of symptoms. Because the underlying cause wil be addressed before it becomes an uncomfotable problem again. Even when a patient is not aware of a problem, and is not experiencing any symptoms, we are able to find the problems before the suffering begins. Maintaining optimal joint health also helps keep low grade inflammation from slowly destroying the joints.
